Well, that was a hell of a week … First, the launch and then our first ever Web Summit in less than a week.

4 inspiring days of networking, pitching, listening, learning, and pub crawling … Web Summit 2017 is over and this is the aftermath:

Web Summit is CRAZY … just like the tech start-up world we are in!! Innovation at its best, the start-ups that will shape tomorrow, the ones that will make the impossible. Everyone was there …

Our target was to create some buzz around Wasapii … around how it can make our social life more interesting, more beautiful. That was not easy given hundreds of start-ups exhibiting and 60.000+ attendees.

We had to somehow stand out (… on a tiny budget). Wasapii balloons were flying up in the air over the exhibition halls and were found on every single corner …

& meeting room …

.. even our little stand got some. Btw, balloons were not allowed according to the summit’s policy … (that is what others may call “living on the edge”).

… like our T-shirt?

Everybody was curious to learn more about The App Paradox. “How are you going to get me off my phone?”, almost everyone asked. We had to answer this question over 200 times … (by the way, if by now you don’t know the answer, then shame on you. I suggest you visit or better download the app).

As for the aftermath? Definitely worth it. More people learned about Wasapii, a few bloggers want to write about us, … and some San Francisco VCs gave us their contact details … And of course, we got the chance to listen & get ideas from some the industry’s pioneers. Not bad!

Spread the word if you share our vision: No more friends that stay over the internet!

Over the past few weeks, we have ran a Quiz survey to understand what people believe Wasapii is. Over 4500 people completed the quiz (thanks!) and the results are definitely worth sharing… **This blog post contains SPOILERS**

Question 1:

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear Wasapii is Sushi. No surprises here – we all love sushi and wasabi spices things up! We hope our Wasapii can do the same – add some spice in your life! A close second was Wassup … a friendly, cheerful, cool way of saying hello to friends and friends-to-be. About 500 of you first thought of pi =3.14159265359 when hearing Wasapii. I guess we share some fans with The Big Bang Theory … (always a good sign in the Tech world).

Question 2:

Thank God Wasapii was not first thought off in the shower (I am scared even to think where would that have led …). I shall not comment on the 2.8% choosing 27th floor (guys, we are still to become tycoons…but thanks for the trust). Wasapii was indeed first conceptualized in a bar while looking at people ignoring others next to them – instead they were glued in their phones poking, liking, chatting, snapping, tweeting – come on people “LIFE IS BETTER OUTSIDE OUR PHONES”!

Question 3:

Wasapii is a super awesome super cool mobile app #launching soon and its going to be LEGEN – wait for it – DARY. But if it were to have super powers as some of you wish, then it would have been The Wasp, the femme fatale Superheroine firing bioelectric energy blasts! (No – its not an App just for girls …)

Question 4:

Wasapii will get you off your phone to meet real people in real places in real time. No! It’s not a dating app! (even though I have seen people hooking up at the cheese counter in my local supermarket). But how can a Mobile App claim it will get me off my phone? It’s a mobile app, by definition it runs in my phone – AN APP PARADOX!!

Question 5:

Is Wasapii a Social Network? A diversified set of answers here – a bit confused aren’t you? Certainly, Wasapii is not the next Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, SnapChat etc etc. We do not want it to be! We focus on getting people that are close closer and then get them off their phone. There will never, never, ever be any friend requests or follows in Wasapii. Friends are real and are around us – they are not over the internet or in a stupid App.

Question 6:

To be honest, this question was more of a poll to pick a name! In our Team, it’s been a tie between Wasapiis & The Wasapiians since the very beginning however it seems Wasapiis is a clear winner. Big thanks to all the Paleontologists voting for Homo Wasapus … maybe in another project.

Question 7:

And finally … just because they are everywhere, they had to be in this Quiz also! The Kardashian Sisters … I must admit that the mother Kris is a Genius in Marketing – we can all learn from her. For all those that are still wondering, the Kardashian sisters are 3 but the question is really not relevant. Two more, Kylie & Kendall, are daughters of Caitlyn Jenner, the used-to-be-Bruce Olympic Champion.

Making things happen

Step 1: Just do it.

Don’t waste your time guys, it won’t work. If only people listened to others telling them what they can’t do. Nothing good would have ever happened. That was the first challenge we had to overcome. Trying out something totally new and outside our comfort zone. But isn’t that where magic happens?

Step 2: Out of our heads and down on paper.

Alrighty. Wasapii will change the way we interact with people around us. But lets first answer some quick questions: what is it really? is it just another app? is it just another social network or will it drive social-networking? how will it work? is it going to fill just our needs or also the needs of others? is there something similar around? Lots of coffee (and a tiny bit of alcohol..). We started with some basic functionality and simple sketches. Seems promising.

Step 3: But we don’t know how to code.

So what. Everyone thinks that if you don’t code, you can’t run a website or an app. In the same way, that you can’t own a house if you can’t lay bricks. As long as you know what the product should be, understand the basic tech concepts & limitations, can set & monitor deliverables, add the right controls and … test test test … as if you were a user. That’s all you need.

There are so many super star developers out there that can code. Lets find one. And we did.

Step 4: Who ‘d you rather?

What shall we call it? Hiipo, giizoo, koala, lemon, blackpepper… Wasapii. Colours? Blue, red or other? It should sound, look & feel perfect. Design is key – people that know me think I am a freak when it comes to design, but then again we all love the way the iphone looks & feels.

Reaching out to friends at every stage of the process is the best single thing we did: concept, design, colours, … Anyone seen Ellen Degeneres “who‘d you rather”?

Step 5: Shall we launch?

Not yet. Lets first create some buzz & anticipation. After all Wasapii is something worth waiting for.

– Create a blog. You are reading it now.

– Organize an event around the launch (ok you won’t see us on stage wearing black turtlenecks & jeans … but its going to be AWESOME).

– Involve people and ask for likes, shares, inviting their friends etc on social media. (if you didn’t get the hint up to now, I hope you just did)

– Get emails from people interested in how this product will change their lives & keep them posted.

– Share milestones. Hmmm … 1 billion sign-ups sound good. But lets get real … 100.000 sign-ups and 500.000 likes sounds awesome.

– Keep the suspense. More on that later.

Step 6: Time to launch.

Light bulb moments

Just another Friday night and we were enjoying a drink in our local bar. Interesting discussions, smiles, laughter, sharing true moments with friends …

People around us, taking selfies, posting on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, Likes, Pokes, Snaps, Friend Requests, Follows.  What is going on? Is this how it’s supposed to be?

«Friends» that you meet on social networks, friends that stay over the internet? Ignoring people next to you? What ever happened to interacting with friends in real, meeting new people at a bar, …?

No – friends should be real and should be outside our phones.

That was it … Our light bulb moment. Wasapii is born.
